Ja jag fattar egentligen inte vad det är folk har emot Halo. Är det bara det att Microsoft står som utgivare eller kan man verkligen inte gilla spelen. Är ju en av de mest hyllade spelserierna genom tiderna.
Det här ser helt underbart ut. Hade jag haft mer tid skulle jag skaffat ODST så att man kan komma in i betan, men får vänta till i höst. =) |

Idag har det släppts en massa förhandstittar och en massa bilder om och på betan som mycket snart hoppar igång :)
Då Neogaf har en sjuhelvetes bra tråd om allt med betan så hänvisar jag till den om det är något som undras över =)

En sak som var störande i Halo 3 var att spelet laddade banan innan man kunde lägga veto. Så om banan blev nerröstad så var spelet tvunget att ladda den nya banan vilket gör att det tar mycket längre tid att få igång matchen än vad det hade behövts. Hoppas det är något de fixat till Reach.

Whether you love Halo or hate it, it's impossible to deny that developer Bungie knows exactly what they're doing in the multiplayer arena. Sure, "real" war games like Modern Warfare 2 and Bad Company 2 are a lot of fun and provide a welcome (and necessary) counterbalance to the sci-fi-heavy combat found in the Halo games, but there's a good reason why the Halo Game du Jour is always near the top of the list of Xbox Live's most played games: the multiplayer team at Bungie knows what works and they stick to their formula. This was never more evident than on my recent trip to the developer's studio just outside of Seattle. After spending an entire day playing the most anticipated beta of the year, I came away with a list of things I loved about Halo: Reach's multiplayer offerings. Will you love all of them? Probably not. But hey, at least we can all agree that no more dual-wielding is a very good thing indeed. 1. The Customer's Always Right: Halo players have always had good deal of customization options at their fingertips, but the offerings in recent entries like Halo 3 or ODST pale in comparison to the variety found in Reach. Not only will players be able to change their avatar's cosmetic appearance (more on that later), there are also a number of new Matchmaking improvements. Being able to choose matches based on language or level of competition (in addition to old standby connection speed) makes it more likely that players will be able to find a match that will actually make them happy. As for me, I'm most looking forward to using the new and (greatly) improved voting mechanic. Gone are the days of vetoing a map and getting thrown into an even less desirable one, as players will now be offered a number of map/mode combinations that can be voted on democratically. If you're still not happy with your lot in life, you can either quit or just suck it up. 2. Maptacular: Some would argue that most Halo multiplayer games are only as good as their maps, and this seems to be the case once again. The beta will feature 4 new maps, each of which has been tailored and tweaked to support specific game modes. Our day began with a flythrough of Overlook, a map that features a spectacular vista that provides a lovely backdrop to the inevitable carnage that takes place in games of Generator Defense. Powerhouse looks similar to Overlook with its rocky outcroppings and grassy areas, although the giant pool in the middle provides little cover. My personal favorite maps are Boneyard, a massive map (think Sandtrap, only bigger) that's been designed with the new Invasion game mode in mind, as well as Swordbase, a vertical map that features criss-crossing ramps. This map is perfect for jetpack-sporting Spartans, as using the ramps is a great way to get from top to bottom quickly (and without broken legs). 3. Weaponology: Before I fully dive into this section on the deliciously destructive new toys in the beta, I should disclose that I hated the Battle Rifle in previous Halo games. With that in mind, it's probably not surprising that I wasn't exactly jumping up and down with delight when I learned of the new BR-esque Designated Marksman Rifle (or DMR) in Halo: Reach. Little did I know that this mid- to long-range weapon would quickly become my new favorite weapon, as I was able to pull off headshots with much greater ease than with the BR. In addition to the DMR, I spent some quality time with a few other new weapons, particularly the Grenade Launcher and its Covenant cousin, the Plasma Grenade Launcher. The human Grenade Launcher is one of the few weapons in Reach with what could best be termed an "alt fire" mode, as I could fire a grenade without detonating it by holding down the right trigger. This allowed me to set traps near key locations, blowing up my foes whenever they came too close. The Plasma version, on the other hand, actually allowed me to lock-on to enemies while they were on foot, firing up to four of the sticky explosives that tracked my target. The new weapons are a lot of fun, although I'm sure there will be some people that miss "the good old days" of Battle Rifles and SMGs. 4. Decisions, Decisions: Much ado has been made of Reach's new ability system, and for good reason. Essentially, Reach represents Bungie's first real foray into class-based multiplayer thanks in large part to the abilities, which fundamentally change the way you play the game. While Sprint is exactly what you'd expect (and exactly what I needed when I wanted to get away from trouble fast) and Evade comes in handy when battling one-on-one, it's the Jetpack and Armor Lock abilities that really make Halo: Reach stand head and shoulders above its predecessors. As I expected, the Jetpack ability allowed me to get the proverbial jump on my enemies, especially if they didn't see me`before I took off. Using any ability is as simple as hitting the left bumper, but for some reason it took a little while for me to get used to having access to them at almost any time. While the Jetpack is easily the most "fun" of all the abilities, it's the Armor Lock that will most likely become a fan favorite (particularly amongst good Halo players). Using this ability made me invulnerable for a few moments, even when I was about to be run down by a Warthog-driving enemy. Of course, not being able to move also means you'll be dead meat if a patient enemy just holds off for a few moments. Armor Lock came in most handy when trying to capture or hold a point, as multiple teammates could stagger their Locks to ensure at least one player would be alive at any given moment. 5. Mo' Modes: Of course, any Halo game worth its salt introduces a few new gametypes to the already impressive mix of modes, and Reach does exactly that. Headhunter tasks players with grabbing the flaming skull that drops from their fallen foe, with the twist being that you can hold as many skulls as possible before dropping them off at an ever-changing location. You've got to make a decision: Do you make a run every time you get a skull, or do you wait until you've got a bunch? Like a Capture the Flag match on speed, Stockpile is all about getting one of four neutral flags and dropping it off in a spot that will disappear after a certain amount of time. Once the on-screen timer ticks down to zero, any captured flags inside the zone will score points for your team. Again, there are decisions to be made, as you can either go for the flags to score points for your team or harass your opponents by preventing them from doing the same. The most entertaining game mode (at least for this editor) is Invasion, the first multi-part gametype in Halo's brief history. It's broken into three phases, with Spartans defending and Elites attacking. Basically, every time the attacking team succeeds at completing an objective (shutting down defenses, opening a data core, stealing said core, etc), the next one will open. The coolest element in all of this is that more powerful weapons and vehicles will unlock during each phase. This means that by the end of the game everyone will be driving tanks or firing Spartan Laser. It's an intense blast of fun, and it might end up being the most popular mode in the beta. 6. Playing Dress-up with Master Chief: If you're one of those (rare) Halo players that cares more about how you look than how you play, you're going to love the Armory, which allows for far more armor customization than ever before. Yes, you'll finally be able to play dress-up with your Spartan, tweaking everything from the color and shape of his visor to the shape of the armor on his left shoulder. Is this necessary? Probably not? Is it fun? It sure is. In order to unlock these cosmetic options, you'll have to use the credits that you earn while playing the game. From what I've gathered, you'll get credits for winning matches or doing particularly awesome things in the course of a game. There will also be some items that won't unlock until the entire community hits certain milestones. A new visor for killing five billion Grunts? Sign me up! 7. Commendable Actions: In addition to all of the badges that players have been winning for years, there will also be commendations that can be earned for valor in combat. There will be a total of 7 commendations in the beta, although the only ones I earned were for hitting a certain number of headshots and serving as the wheelman for a mobile killing machine. Not only will you get to brag to your friends about your skills, you'll also get more credits for every commendation that's unlocked. My hope is that these will stack up across the board, meaning you can build up to a commendation in both single-player, multiplayer, and co-op play. 8. Unleash Your Inner Assassin: It might seem like a small thing and it doesn't earn you any extra credits or commendations (as far as I can tell), but the new melee "flourish" kills are like adding insults to your foes' injuries. Performing an assassination is only slightly tougher than a regular melee kill in that you need to be behind your opponent before holding down the melee attack. If you can time it right (and believe me, it takes a while to get the timing down), you'll pop out into a third-person view so you can watch yourself slash a foe's throat or stab him in the back. It may not seem like much as first, but it won't be long before you're going for the riskier assassination every time you get the jump on an enemy. 9. Race Matters: In each of the previous Halo games, it really didn't matter which race you played as, since the Covenant Elites were virtually identical to the Spartans. In Reach, the two races differ quite a bit. While you won't be able to play as an Elite in every game mode (Invasion and Generator Defense seemed to be the only ones available in the beta), it's easy to spot the difference once you do. For one, Elites are faster and stronger than Spartans, and their health will regenerate while Spartans have to grab health packs (yes, you read that correctly). The biggest difference between the two is the fact that each race has a single ability that the other doesn't. Spartans can sprint and Elites can dodge, meaning that while the Spartans might get to an objective first, it's the Elites that will be harder to hit. I'll be interested to see if there are any balancing issues between the two, since the Elite seem to have an obvious advantage on paper. 10. From Top to Bottom: Finally, there's the new radar, which now allows you to tell whether an enemy is above you, below you, or on the same level. It's a little thing that takes some time to fully embrace, but it actually makes a huge difference now that there's a greater emphasis on vertical action thanks to the jetpacks and maps like Sword Base. Will everyone like these changes? Of course not. But I have a feeling that there's a little something for everyone (that doesn't hate Halo, naturally) in the Halo: Reach beta. If you want to find out for yourself, keep an eye on GameSpy next week, as we might have some surprises in store for you. |
